Gastronomic Goodies in ’98-’99 Ads

Visitors to the Lopez Memorial Museum develop cultural indigestion after walking through galleries full of Rizal relics and art by Luna, Hidalgo, and Amorsolo. Usually, the collection of Filipiniana books and periodicals is ignored, thus the curious few who persevere and browse in the library are often rewarded by being shown a copy of the newspaper published the day they were born. On a recent visit to the Lopez Museum, I decided to dig up the newspapers for August 13, 1961, my birthday.

Nothing noteworthy seemed to have happened both internationally and nationally. The day, in fact, was very disappointing. The headlines were: “3 MEN ROB CABBIE, SHOOT COP IN DUEL.” Another paper had more: “GANG FLEES IN TAXICAB; NET SPREAD. DRIVER LOCKED IN LUGGAGE ROOM, CUTS OFF FUEL LINE.” In desperation, I requested the evening editions, hoping to find some earthshaking event that accompanied my coming into the world. However, I was met by more crime, “THUGS PULL P17,110 ROB.” Money must have cost a lot then for such an amount to make page one. The only other arresting story was “ILOILO HUSBAND KILLS OWN WIFE, MAID, HIMSELF.”
